dee dee sheffieldWhat characteristics do you think a leader should posses? When I think about it, leaders need to think with vision and no preconceived notions. Leaders are fearless.

As a young submarine commander’s wife, my leadership skills were put to the test. I had the unpaid, but expected job of being liaison to the ship’s families. Later, I became president of the Submarine Officers Wives Club in Pearl Harbor; leading the officers’ wives so that they can, in turn, lead the younger officers and enlisted wives and offer support and guidance.

In these positions I had faced some controversial decisions. At my first meeting I proposed that we disband the officers’ wives club and make it open to all spouses; both officers and enlisted and call it the Navy Spouse Club. I also stated we should add “spouse” because women will soon be serving on submarines and their husbands will need similar support. Of course this was met with some opposition.

While my idea may not have taken off back then, I feel as though my leadership did make a difference and helped shape the changes that have been made today.
